Joann Medrano teaches U.S. History, AP US History and AP World History Modern. She is also the JSA advisor and Cultural Explorers advisor at Alliance Margaret M. Bloomfield High School in Huntington Park, CA.
As much as she loves teaching, Ms. Medrano prides herself on being a lifelong learner. Following high school, she completed her A.A. degree in Chicano Studies at East Los Angeles College and then her B.A. degree in History at Cal State Los Angeles in 2011.
From 2013 to 2015, Ms. Medrano lived in Jiangmen, China, where she taught English and Communication for grades 1-10 and adults. Upon her return to the United States, Ms. Medrano became a substitute teacher and also worked on finishing her graduate degree which she completed in fall of 2016.
As a result of her graduate learning, she published two academic articles in the historical journal, Perspectives in 2016 & 2017.
Now in her fifth year at Bloomfield, Ms. Medrano has continued her pursuit of knowledge by participating in several teacher seminars. In the summer of 2017 she traveled to New York as a Gilder Lehrman seminar candidate and learned about the history of memory at the 9/11 Memorial and Museum. Last summer, she once again participated in a Gilder Lehrman seminar, this time focusing on John F. Kennedy in conjunction with the JFK Presidential Library in Boston. She also traveled to Colonial Williamsburg in Virginia to learn about Colonial America.
